Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an art teacher in one of the largest K-6 schools in my district. I serve over 860 students a week, on a cart. Our school is very multicultural, serving Hispanic, African American, Caucasian, Philippine, Taiwanese, and Polish students.

We are a low-income, limited English school. Over 52% of our students are ELL. Despite this we are a very high achieving school. My school is very proud of its diversity and achievements, and we thrive on beating the odds. Most of our success is owed to the amazing teachers and administration that work together to make sure all students' needs are met. Although we do not have unlimited resources, as a group, we do all that we can to ensure that our students feel safe and loved.

One major obstacle that I face, as an Art teacher with no classroom is engaging the younger students in three-dimensional building. It is a very important concept to understand and helps students to make gains in mathematics, science and the arts. I need 6 sets of slot-together wooden block builders to assist students in building up the concept of three-dimensional work.

Your help will not just excite and stimulate my student's senses, but give them the feeling of pride and privilege. My student's will know that someone really cares about them and their education, and this type of encouragement is needed, within our demographic. Any support that these kids get is going to keep them in school and push them to do amazing things in life.
