Microscopic Pet Blog Combines Art, Science and Technology

My artistically-minded biology students need a digital microscope to capture the intrinsic beauty of hydra preying on unsuspecting daphnia and common bolete mushrooms releasing their deep-green spores.

Art in a science classroom? Nearly every day at our Public Charter High School for Arts and Technology! Students in all levels of science are painting animal tracks on the walls, taking weather and geography photographs, and writing songs that extol the blessings of ionic bonding!

Our science classes often have 4 lab groups, yet only 3 microscopes - yet the students are fascinated with the beauty of the 'microcosmos', and will often try and capture what they see with paints and pencils. As a public charter school, we really know how to stretch a shoestring budget - but some things we just can't afford.

A digital microscope, with accompanying software, can be used to take still or time lapse photographs and movies of all that occurs microscopically. Students can watch predator-prey relationships occur in pond water, they can examine the crystalline structure of snowflakes and minerals, and they can discover the beauty in familiar objects, like the shed skin of our class' Ball Python. The images that students capture using a digital microscope, in turn, can be re-interpreted by our artists as appealing and compelling educational displays, poignant art pieces, or deftly edited slideshows, animations and movies. These images and movies can also be uploaded to our class' science blog on the web!

Your help will allow my school to further develop the technology portion of its mission, it will help me to educate my students about the important processes that occur at a microscopic scale, and it will inspire my students to create beautiful works of art. Most importantly, however, a lens into the micro-world will help excite my students about Science.
