I am a fourth year kindergarten teacher who has the awesome privilege of teaching some of the smartest and most adorable 4 and 5 year olds in New York.

Unfortunately for them, however, they live in a low income community and their parents lack the necessary resources and skills needed to help them advance and succeed. They often lack the prior knowledge needed to help them infer and make text to text connections as well as text to self connects. When doing read-a-louds, I often find that they struggle with vocabulary and aren't able to infer from the pictures because these pictures aren't familiar to them. They are also very excited and interested in Social Studies and Science but again, because they lack the prior knowledge and my school lacks the resources, it is often very difficult to explain certain concepts to 4 and 5 year olds without some form of visual aid.

In an effort to address this problem, I have been borrowing resources from other teachers which they can use for center activities to help them better grasp the lessons in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. So far, I have seen where they are able to start making text to text connections from the books that they have listened to, and have become very excited about "centers time" as they know that I would have borrowed something fun and new for them to help them learn. Whereas borrowing resources is a great alternative, it is not always a feasible one. Having our very own projector to aid in our social studies and science lessons as well as board books for guided reading and mentor texts for read alouds will be extremely beneficial for all the scholars involved.

Seeing the difference these read alouds, mentor texts and visual aid have made, made me realize that I, with your help can do my part to be an even more effective and efficient teacher by having my own resources to help these students advance and be at, or above their grade level. This will be accomplished by using our current centers rotation, which is daily, to help my students develop and understand what it means to have prior knowledge. This will take effect immediately as I don't feel the need to deprive my students any longer from receiving the skills that they will need to become efficient at understanding and applying prior knowledge to stories that they will read, or have read to them on a regular basis, as well as gaining exposure to the world around them through the use of a visual aid will be essential to their learning and development. Again, with your help, we can help my students master this particular
