Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day.” I am a self-contained, multi-subject, sixth grade teacher at a designated low-income elementary school. The student population is minority-based with a high concentration of English Language Learners.

My students are very interested in mythology. I feel that one of the most important things I can do to foster this interest is to provide my students with the curriculum they need to feed their need for discovery. Percy Jackson and the Olympians is an amazing literature series that chronicles the life of a modern 6th grade boy who was sired by Poseidon, the sea god, and a mortal woman, making Percy a Half-Blood. The hook is that the big three, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, made a pact after WWII (which was started by their unpredictable Half-Blood children) that they would never sire children with mortals again. And then Percy came along, which broke the pact. If it hadn’t been for Percy proving his father’s innocence, by returning Zeus’s Master Bolt and Hade’s Helm, Ares (god of war) could have achieved his master plot to provoke WWIII.

Our sixth grade Social Studies curriculum introduces students to ancient civilizations in a very drab manner, which lacks creativity and connections to prior knowledge. This year, after teaching Greek mythology, I read The Lightening Thief (book #1) to my students. Sadly, through the first few chapters of the book, my students were able to recall very little from the mythology unit as it applied to the story. This was not what I had anticipated. However, by the time the book reached its climax my students had a breakthrough. Not only were they able to recall the gods and what affect they had on the world, but also how each were related. This was a huge accomplishment! I would like for each one of my students to have the opportunity to follow along in the reading so that their connection to the story is enriched and the content embedded. In addition to the reading, the movie is coming out; what a great opportunity for compare/contrast analysis.

Here's a teaser: Annabeth, a daughter of Athena, is one of Percy's dearest allies. In the book, children of Athena all have blond hair and grey eyes and Annabeth's are stunning...but not in the movie! In the movie she is a brunette with blue eyes. Go figure. My students enjoyed the first book so much, they are begging to continue the series (how often does that happen?). Oh my gods! Who has the Master Bolt? has the potential to embed ancient Greek mythology into these student's lives in a way that they are sure to remember. Your contributions are sure to quench my student’s thirst for more Percy Jackson!
