A Tisket, A Tasket, My Own Reading Basket

My students need 22 book baskets for storing their individually selected stories to read during silent reading each day.

We read for pleasure because books are a treasure! I teach all subject areas for my second grade students. Our school has a high population of children with special needs as well as regular education classrooms. This provides unique opportunities for mainstreaming, reverse mainstreaming, and an atmosphere of kindness and compassion.

My second graders love to read. Although we practice reading skills as a whole class, the most treasured part of the day is silent reading. This is a time where students can select books they are interested in and simply enjoy the reading experience. Our classroom library is quite extensive, and many students may spend precious reading minutes just looking for books. In order to maximize this independent reading time, it would be helpful for students to store their selection of books in individual baskets. In this way, students can easily locate their baskets, find a place to sit, and focus their time on enjoying their books rather than looking for them.

I would love to have a book basket for each of my students. I would then label each basket with the student names. This would allow the children to take ownership and responsibility for their book baskets. Each basket would be stored in a designated bookshelf with that child's name. By providing students with labeled baskets, they can easily access their books throughout the day and maximize their reading time and enjoyment.

Your support would not only increase the amount of time my students spend reading, but also enhance their overall reading experience. In addition, you would further instill a love for reading in these young children and emphasize that "We read for pleasure because books are a treasure!"
