This proposal is for the continuation of a high school film project that allows theater students to produce a film and share their results. It motivates students by harnessing the appeal of technology and media to engage students in the learning process. The school, classified as a primarily high poverty school with the majority of students qualifying for subsidized meal programs, initiated a film project as a part of their theater program in 2009. The project is off to a strong start, with the students working together to develop the concepts for their final films.

The theater program is growing every year, although there is no established budget for supplies and materials. The students represent a wide range of age, ability level and interest; the central strength in the mixture of students coming from these varied background is the level of creativity that they bring to the class. In order to channel this creativity in the right direction, they require projects that will allow them to take ownership of the project. With this in mind, the film project was developed to allow them the opportunity to work collaboratively. The school is located in a small rural county; therefore there are very few extra curricular programs available to the students. The only specialized opportunities in the arts are those offered by the schools, since the closest theaters or studios are found in the capital city, 30 miles away. As they have worked on filming during the project, they have stated on numerous occasions the desire to share their work with parents and the community.

The students in the three theater classes have been so excited about their films and videos that they have been self motivated to publicize their products. As they continue to compile their film clips, they will need the access to the technology in order to view their clips and save their footage during editing, as well as share their efforts after compiling the footage. The pride that they have demonstrated thus far during filming will be multiplied in the distribution of the fruits of their efforts. In order to successfully complete and share the videos, we need an updated computer monitor and DVD duplicator, as well as one flash drive and blank DVDs for each class in order to properly save the results.

Your assistance with the funding of this project will allow the students to follow their interests in theater, film, and the editing process, while allowing them to create a final product and share it with their family and the community. This experience will demonstrate for the students in the upper grades the atmosphere required for the advanced work that will be required at the collegiate level. The environment of collaboration will allow them to distribute the responsibilities throughout the group and learn at a higher cognitive level than in a traditional setting. The project will foster an appreciation for the effort required in order to create a quality product, which prefaces the environment that will allow them success in college and later, in the workplace.
