Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Middle School Library Character - Building Group **High - Need Community** The book, We Beat the Street is a poignant true story of three young men who overcame barriers such as crime, drugs, and academic failure to become doctors. This after - lunch group of middle school students has been making connections to the pressures they face in their own lives. After four months of study, my students can articulate visions for a much brighter future than previously considered.

Participants collaborate on an online book blog, a discourse wiki, and related arts and crafts projects. The book topic and resulting discussions are giving my students the opportunity to reflect meaningfully on self - improvement and character building. While I am reading, my students become completely engrossed with the story and pose very intelligent and constructive questions.

My students are requesting personal copies of the book. Currently, I read aloud from my personal copy. It is exciting and encouraging that these students, among the most disaffected of the school, are asking for reading material.

Your help will further broaden the horizons of my students. Having a personal copy of the book will give them the opportunity to re-read independently and to reflect on a more personal level.
