Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Grandmother Just Died...I never got a chance to ask her... I teach language arts, 5th grade, high-need. high-poverty community.

During the Heritage Unit, we are learning about our families, our cultures, our heritage. Students are encouraged to bring in realia and memorabilia from their cultures -- they are so excited about this! They're bringing in Mexican flags, pictures of grandparents and great-grandparents, tortilla makers given to them from great-aunts...all wonderful memories. But almost none of them can tell a story about their grandparents or great grandparents. Storytelling is a thing of the past, and our past is being lost with it! People don't share their history with each other often enough...is it because of our technological age? Too busy with TV and video games, texting each other, cell phones...? Too busy to sit down and talk?

Our project will be to interview the oldest member of the family. To do this, we need microcassettes and microcassette recorders (like the newspaper reporters use). Family histories will be told and shared with classmates. Students will be empowered to transcribe this information and save it forever!

I never asked my grandparents about their coming to America back in the early 1900s. I so regret that. Your help will ensure that my students know about their roots, their family's beginnings, their heritage.
