"First graders love science! As a teacher of first grade scientists, my goal is not only to teach science standards but also to assist students in connecting their Science discoveries to real life.

This year I asked students to bring in old white button up shirts which they wore as "lab coats" when we did Science. The "lab coats" were useful as they protected students clothing from spills and messes. The coats also made the students feel like real scientists.

On the other hand, many of the shirts were baggy and got in the way as we performed Science experiments. The children really enjoyed wearing their lab coats and the coats motivated the children to be more hands on.

I would like to purchase lab coats that my classes can use year after year. I have a seamstress ready to alter (at no charge) the lab coats to fit the average six/seven year old. I would also like to purchase safety goggles to add to our Science supplies. It is amazing what a difference a small motivation like this can make in the interest of the children. If you dress nice, you feel nice. If you dress like a scientist, you feel like a scientist!

The cost of 16 lab coats from Lab Safety Supply and 16 child safety goggles from Delta Education is $678, including shipping and fulfillment ?.

Dear ScienceBlogs and Janet,
It is exciting to have lab coats and safety goggles. Last year my students brought in oversized white shirts but they loved wearing them during Science. I know my students will love wearing the real thing this year. Your contributions will help my students actively participate and enjoy science. Thank you, thank you!
