Help us grow and expand our first ever school library! I am a K-6 Technology Educator at a low-income K-12 Charter School in Southeast Michigan. Our school was built 5 years ago, but up until now, has never had a school library. Taking over as Technology Educator this year, I made it my mission this past summer to organize hundreds of boxes of donated books in order to create a lending library for our students.

Our students have never had the opportunity of utilizing a library up until now. When surveying my students, most of them have never even been to their local public library. With tough economic times in Michigan, and parents working overtime, it is often hard to get parents to take their children to the library. Having this library empowers students to take a step toward becoming a better reader. Our students are so excited to check out books and audio/visual materials, but we need a way to stay organized and keep track of the materials we have already obtained and will add in the future.

My technology lab has turned into the information "hub" of the school. We went from a room with computers in it, to a media center where K-12 students can not only be on the computer, but are now able to utilize all the benefits of a school library. We have books and audio/visual materials, however we need this bar code scanner and system to help keep our library collection organized, and to teach responsibility and accountability with our students. This system will greatly help myself and volunteers keep our library running smoothly, so we can concentrate on getting books into the hands of students, and help them form a love of learning and reading.

Educators and volunteers in the library can focus on helping students make good reading choices and check students out quickly and efficiently. By donating to this project, you will make a difference in the lives of 700+ students who will practice responsibility and accountability within the school and library.
