I teach second grade in a high poverty school (we presently have 87% of our students receiving free and reduced-price lunch and all receive free breakfast). Our classroom is an old trailer and we have little money for extra supplies and needs.

My class is filled with enthusiastic and hard-working students. It is made up of many races and cultures. Additionally, I have a wide variety of learning levels, from some students who barely know the alphabet to those reading at a fourth grade level. What common thread all of my children share is the love of reading. Even those who barely know the English language enjoy looking at the pictures and sounding out the few words that they have learned.

I have chosen a wide variety of books for my students, including beginning readers that are bilingual, easy read science books, very short chapter books, and books that have lots of pictures to grab their attention. These books will help to foster a life-long love of reading, and will help my beginning readers to learn how to read.

Books are a wonderful addition to any classroom because of the instant joy and learning they bring, and because they will be used for many, many years. Help me to encourage my kids to learn to read, to read more, and most of all to love reading!
