Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an 8th grade English Arts teacher in an inner city school in New York. My students desperately need new books to read. My students are below grade level in reading and live in a high poverty area. One of my biggest obstacles is to get students interested in reading. They need books they can relate to, and that have issues in them that are important to their lives. They need books that take place in areas similar to where they live, with characters that have problems they want to read about. I have chosen a few books that my students in the past have found extremely engaging. I brought in one copy of some new books, and now all the students want to read them. I know that if I put copies of these books into my students' hands they will want to read. My students need 10 copies each of 'The Brothers Torres', 'Project 17', and 'Hot Girl'. The books that I have chosen are about issues that are important to my students. 'The Brothers Torres' is about the relationship between two brothers that many students can relate to, and 'Hot Girl' is about popularity and fitting in. They are books that will provoke meaningful discussions. You can make it possible for my students to read a book for the first time in their lives that they want to KEEP reading and TALK about. These book clubs are an important first step for my students to develop of love of reading and learn to enjoy reading a book.
