When Words Are Not Enough

My students need a classroom set of magnetic water molecules.

Educational research proves that students need instruction tailored to meet their individual needs. This isn't always easy with the limited resources in an economically depressed area of North Carolina. Here at the early college we strive to produce college ready students by collaborating on multidisciplinary assignments in which students are exposed to relationships between the various curriculum areas.

As I high school science teacher I have worked with the English department to incorporate this multidimensional mode of learning with my Physical Science students. We have discovered a wonderful essay describing the unique and and sometimes mystical properties of water which appeared in the New York Times. The articles speaks to the extensive and intricate connections that water has to our daily lives. The author describes in eloquent prose how the properties of water are the result of its molecular structure. This is in sharp contrast to the often stale context of the science textbook. This essay alone is wonderful for those students who can read section of text and immediately it becomes a part of their knowledge base, however some students need to see, feel, and manipulate the information in order for it to be processed.

I have recently discovered a kit which can be purchased from scientific supply companies that gives students hands-on models of water molecules embedded with magnets which simulate the attraction between water molecules and the formation of hydrogen bonds among the water molecules, thus giving water its unique properties. With this kit my students need not only read about the structure and properties of the water molecule but could actually experience it for themselves.

Your donation could allow an interesting English/science lesson to blossom into a great hands on interdisciplinary lesson. A lesson that reaches out to the individual learning styles of all the students involved.
