"Until one has loved an animal, a part of the soul remains unawakened.”— Anatole France As a teacher of at-risk youth in an Alternative Education program, I have seen some terrible incidents of indifference by students who feel that the world has turned its back on them. Students in the program range from 6th to 8th grade and often carry much emotional baggage with them.

All too often, our students lack the ability to find a "real-world" cause for which they feel passionately. For whatever reason, someone has given up on these kids. But not us! This year, our team has begun a Service Learning Project to help our students get involved with the community. We have been working extensively to help our local animal shelter. Students have met the project with unmatched enthusiasm and we want to help them take it even further.

While we do not lack in dedication to our project, we do lack funding to show everyone the great things we are accomplishing through our hard work. Students are trying their best to display monthly accomplishments on a student centered blog. The equipment we have is very outdated, so unfortunately students can not contribute to the blog except through me. We really would love (and need!!!) some updated technology to allow students to engage more actively in this activity. If we had access to student digital cameras and digital recorders, students could document the ways in which they are helping shelter animals by creating their own blog entries to share with people across the world! Of course, the perspective of an audience will help students work to improve both their writing, their use of technology, and their communication skills.

By supporting our cause, you will make it possible for my students to document their time at the shelter through a variety of technology enhanced academic activities. Not only will the students benefit from your generosity, they will continue to build compassion and help animals in need. Best of all, they will be able to record their dedication and show the world around them that they can accomplish anything they desire! Thank you in advance for your consideration!
