Please, Don't Eat My Art!

My students need a drying rack to safely store and dry any art created with wet media.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I didn't expect to be having so much fun working so hard with 76 five-year-olds! I had the privilege of becoming my school's first art teacher as we opened our doors this past September. We are a new charter school in Rhode Island currently serving 76 Kindergarten scholars from a range of socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.

My Kindergarten art scholars continue to impress me with their ability to embrace every art experience with enthusiasm and rigor. They are 100% ready to take on whatever task I set before them. Thus, I believe it is my duty and personal challenge to expose them to as much art media and materials I can access... It goes without saying that many of these art projects require wet media and LOTS of drying time! One of our school values focuses on Respect; not only towards others, but also taking care of school and personal property. I feel that I am not able to teach my scholars how to respect their art without the proper equipment to store it safely. I currently teach art in an area that is part of the school's cafeteria, so I place all wet art on the lunch tables to dry. I must pile up the work at the end of the day regardless of whether it has completely dried or not, due to the fact that breakfast (and lunch) will need to take over the space the very next morning. I fear I am not showing respect to my scholars' artistic efforts if it just ends up all sticking together in the end!

Acquiring a drying rack would enable me to store my scholars art safely and respectfully during the drying process. It would drastically cut down on the space required to dry 76 projects and not leave sticky, wet messes on the lunch tables.

With your help, I will be able to teach my scholars how to care for their art and the art of others, and we would no longer have those giant, sticky piles to peel apart! Best yet, we would no longer worry that someone will end up eating art for lunch!
