Kids Who Have Never Seen a Play Go to Ashland Shakespeare!

My students need two tickets each - one for Shakespeare's play, "Hamlet", and the other for Shakespeare's play, "Twelfth Night". They will go to see these plays - the first most have ever seen - at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon.

If you can, picture a tiny school in the mountains with under 300 kids. Picture children who have never been to the city, have seen a few films at a movie theatre, and who long to go out into the world and live good lives.

I teach English and Reading to 6th and 7th graders, and I also am blessed with a drama and music class. Almost no child in my class has ever seen a play! I warm up with them every day using words of William Shakespeare, and they know very well that the words, "To be or not to be" were written by this great author and playwright. My students love to act! We just finished our production of "Hairspray" and our now working on a production of "Beauty and the Beast" and an original play the students and I are writing together called, "Kidz". Our obstacle to getting to see plays is partly where we live in the country, but it is also that the kids are very poor. We have a huge unemployment rate in our county, and many of the students' families are losing their homes. There is not enough money to buy proper school supplies, never mind having enough to go see a play five hours away!

What we need is some help to buy the tickets to see two Shakespeare plays in Ashland. We used our box office receipts from "Hairspray" to put a down-payment on the tickets. We just need help to pay for the rest of the tickets so that 20 of the most hard-working kids can go see their first play. The kids and their families will hold bake-sales to pay for our hotel. Seeing a live performance, if you love to act, can change you in so many ways. A world of possibility opens when kids see excellence, when they hear the words of William Shakespeare, and they get to stay overnight with their friends in a wonderful town like Ashland. This is an opportunity that will surely change these kids' lives.

Your help will enable these young people to see a live performance of two great plays by William Shakespeare. Who knows how this may change them? I know it will open windows and doors to let in a level of culture that my students have never experienced. I know that when people like you, all across America, give to these kids, they feel the world is not so huge, that they can make a difference, that they can shoot for the stars, and there are people cheering for them.
