Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Who wouldn't want the chance to get dirty at school? My kindergarten students are eager about learning. They love to explore hands-on, and they would love the opportunity to get dirty in our school garden. Our garden has only existed for one season, and it was a successful first year. Right now, it is dormant, and we are excited about spring planting. We received a lot of donated vegetable plants last year. I would love to add herbs to the garden to enhance the taste of the fresh vegetables that we will be eating. So many kids are unwilling to try new things, but I believe that if they grow it, they will eat it. It's worked for me at home, and I think it will work at school as well. Ownership is very powerful, and watching something grow from your own efforts is very inspiring.

With the slow local economy, we are not anticipating the same donations we received last year. What we really need are young plants and seed packets. These are relatively inexpensive items that could provide a huge return.

The garden is sitting there, welcoming us to use its soil to the fullest. All we need are the seeds to plant. Some basic gardening tools would be helpful as well, but we're ready to get our hands dirty! Then when we harvest, we'll need a hot plate in the classroom to cook up some healthy, delicious veggies.

Your help will make it possible for students to see the beauty of nature first hand. They will be able to see the amazing possibilities that are contained in tiny seeds. Your help will sow the seeds of learning and foster healthy eating.
