Keep Poetry Alive

My students need 20 leather bound journals, 3 packs of colored copy paper, and 20 copies of the Spoken Word Revolution books about slam poetry.

Slam Poetry is the poetry of this generation! In our high school poetry club we hold many Slam Poetry competitions throughout the year. It is a way for students throughout the school to use words to express their emotions - good and bad. Our school district is in a financial crisis and has extremely limited funding for any and all extra curricular activities. We are a military town that desperately needs help from others.

The students at my high school are offered many opportunities for clubs and other extra-curricular activities, but there is no funding available to support them once they show interest. Slam poetry is an important outlet that allows kids to really voice what they're feeling in a productive manner.

With journals, the kids can take ownership of their poetry by being able to take it with them everywhere they go. The copy paper will allow us to advertise our events without having to pay out of pocket for these marketing needs. The more people aware of a competition, the more money we can raise for future events. The poetry books allow for kids who have never slammed before to see professional poems along with hearing the performances on the CDs provided. These books would be a huge asset to the club by not only better preparing the kids for competition, but also solidifying the validity of the idea.

In a time when kids are getting lost due to a struggling economy and a saddening morale, poetry can empower them to be positive influences on themselves and others. These resources could make a huge impact on many people's lives by allowing these kids to show our community that this generation is worth supporting. Please help make is possible for my club members to improve and be inspired.
