Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work at a special education school, servicing emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and other special education classified students. Our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Over 95% of the student body is eligible for free lunch and over 90% receive public assistance. The school’s ethnicity is as follows: 60% Hispanic, 30% African American, 8% Caucasian, and 2% Asian. These factors come together and place our children at a huge disadvantage, but we are committed to providing them with a rigorous academic and therapeutic program. I teach art to these special needs students, and would like to provide them with an opportunity to visit one of my favorite museums, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The MoMA offers the most interesting collection of art from the past 20 years, as well as some older classic pieces. What I enjoy most about this museum is that I gain new insight into the artists and their work with each visit, and the MoMA also brings in new exhibitions on a regular basis. I would love for my students to be part of this amazing artistic world. For a typical school trip, parents would be asked to provide funds for their children. However, most of my students live in poverty, and their families are unable to reach into their own pockets. We strive to provide our students with as many experiences as possible, regardless of their financial situations. This is a particularly unique opportunity for my students planning to pursue visual and graphic arts degrees in college. I want them to feel, taste, smell, hear, and see art, in all its beautiful forms. Thank you so much for considering my deserving students!!
