Reference Materials for 9-12 English Class

My students need 15-20 copies each of 13 different Dictionaries and Thesauruses, including the "American Heritage Thesaurus", "Slang and Euphemism: A Dictionary of Oaths, Curses, Insults, Ethnic Slurs, Sexual Slang and Metaphor, Drug Talk, College Lingo and Related Matters" and "Mo' Urban Dictionary".

I have the pleasure of teaching English 9, English 10 and Short Fiction in an urban, high-need school. While we are a comprehensive high school, we are divided into Small Learning Communities by future career interests. My students are in the Law and Civil Service Community, which includes career interests ranging from military careers, law-related occupations to careers in teaching.

Imagine, as a teacher, how I am filled with joy when a students asks me for a dictionary, thesaurus or other reference book to answer a question they have. Then, imagine my sadness when all I have to offer them is an old, outdated dictionary/thesaurus that is falling apart. My students have the drive to use reference materials, but I have virtually nothing to offer them and our budget does not allow for these "luxuries".

My students need current reference materials in order to improve their vocabulary and become master communicators. I challenge my students with difficult writing assignments, such as writing their own sonnets. Materials in this proposal, such as rhyming dictionaries, would make these assignments much more enjoyable and fun for my students. Silent reading is also an important aspect of my class, and students are always stumbling upon new vocabulary they are interested in looking up. I would like to encourage this type of investigation by being able to offer new, updated dictionaries to inquisitive students. This is also the type of self-motivated learning that students will need to demonstrate in order to be successful in college. As an educator that sees college as an option for all of my students, I have to encourage the development of strong study skills and support these types of independent learning opportunities that will prepare students for post-secondary education.

By donating to this project you will help my students learn new vocabulary and help them greatly improve their writing skills. This will help them gain confidence in their communication skills, which is crucial for success in college and in the work place. You will enable them to learn the ins and outs of the English language that will help them in every aspect of their future.
