This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the high school librarian of a large urban 9-12 secondary school in California. One of my educational objectives is to encourage my students to express themselves, to better understand their world, and to discover their truest identities through the use of literature.

Teens, especially, leak a deluge of emotions on a daily basis and need outlets for their confusing, angry, euphoric, and dismal feelings; that' where poetry comes in.

However, for most of our students, poetry is a scramble of letters that makes no sense, a riddle they cannot solve, a secret they don't have a key to unlatch.

My Project

I want to change their perceptions of what poetry is because poetry can heal, empower, enrich lives, give voice, provide tools to create meaning out of life, and paint worlds with hope and choices.

Inevitably, whenever the students attend these poetry performances, they suddenly have an appreciation for it and make the connection that poetry is about expressing feelings, using words to share life observations , working through inner turmoil and making peace with oneself.

All of a sudden reading and writing poetry is cool and it makes sense. Furthermore, students I have never seen in the library start coming in to ask me to direct them to the poetry section. Mission accomplished!
