I am the library assistant for a high school campus that is home to 4 small schools. We have a Science school, Arts school, Business and Technology school and a Night school program that focuses on students who work full time but want to finish and get their diploma. Sadly we do not have the money for a Librarian, or funding for new books.

We are a campus that has many students who live at or below the poverty line. Because of this, fundraisers such as book sales are pretty much impossible. Every day I have kids ask me for books on subjects that we don't have, or are very out of date. Many of the students have dreams of going on to college and getting away from the life of poverty they grew up in. We have a great library but sadly when it comes to more up to date reference and research books I don't have the budget to buy new books. The average publication date in the collection is 1977. A lot has changed in the past 30 years and students need to be able to get relevant information from sources other than the Internet. A great example of this problem was the student who came in looking for books about genetic engineering, the newest book I have was printed in 1983. The things we have learned in the past 20 years in huge.

I would like to able to supplement the books we have with newer ones that have more up to date information. Even though we can find pretty much all the information you need on the web, students still need to be able to use books. In college students are required to use primary sources (books) when writing papers.

Your help will ensure that my students have accurate information for their research papers as well as for their own use.
