My students need a working TV with a presentation cart and DVD/VHS player to access video clips and animations.

I currently teach biology to ninth through eleventh graders with special needs. My mission is to ensure every student learns the same material and leaves my class with the same understanding as that of a "general education" student. We are a small school with approximately 350 students, the majority of which live at or below the poverty line.

Many of my students struggle with the day to day obstacles of living in the inner city. An overwhelming amount of my students often lack the basic essentials, everything from inadequate winter clothing to food and a warm bed to sleep in. I cannot tell them to go home and turn on their TV to watch a program on the Discovery Channel or NOVA. I struggle to provide them with visually stimulating material, one of the most effective ways to learn and understand concepts in biology. My students with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome comprehend so much more material after viewing an animation of DNA than simply reading about it in a book.

A TV with a DVD/VHS player would allow me to enhance the learning environment with dozens of animations, videos, and recorded lectures. The impact a four to five minute video has on the comprehension of a student with a learning disability is overwhelming. The materials I have are split between DVD and VHS and it is much too expensive to buy new sets in DVD format and many videos are now only sold in DVD format.

Please understand that your donation will allow EVERY student to access the material that so many people tell them they can never learn. I remind my students everyday that they are just as capable (if not more) than any other high school student. Students with special needs deserve the same materials, resources, education, and dignity that their peers automatically receive. Please grant them this basic right and need. Thank you.
