Gods, Monsters, & Sirens: A 6th Grader's Odyssey

My students need 20 book titless for their ancient Greece unit. In particular, they need kid-friendly versions of Homer's Odyssey.

I teach the most wonderful 130 inner-city 6th graders! They are the reason I love my career and why I want only the best for them. The subject I teach is social studies and our focus is ancient history. One of our future units will be ancient Greece and I desperately need materials to help support their learning in this unit. Our school serves a variety of students from many different backgrounds and learning needs. After suffering some seriously damaging budget cuts and possible future cuts, requesting materials from our school is out of the question at the moment.

Kids love the scary, the gross, the unusual, and the wickedly-interesting things that exist in our world! So, why wouldn't they love the same things when it comes to the ancient world? Building interest and asking children to relate to the ancient past is at times very difficult. I love history and my hopes are to make my children love it too. In order to do this, I need to use materials that reach them on their level and motivate them to go forward. The materials I have chosen will address gifted, struggling, and ESL learners.

History is full of questions. I want my students to ask and find many answers on their own. I want them to be excited by the wonder that ancient Greek culture offers. By providing us with these resources, we will be able to study how people lived first-hand a very long time ago. Our unit will be primarily shaped around Homer's Odyssey. With this focus, our students will be drawn in by the mysterious world of mythology and excited by the adventures of Odysseus. Like Odysseus, our students can relate to confrontations of life's many obstacles. I've come up with a great direction that I believe our students will enjoy but I need the resources to bring it to life. The resources we currently have inside our classroom are quite dismal. In fact, we have few history-related books where our library shelving sits. The books that are there, are ones I, myself have purchased. My goal is to increase our classroom library over the next year. This will make it possible for students to have direct access to informative subject materials. This is especially helpful for when they have project assignments. This means the classroom is the number one place to get help.

"It is tedious to tell again tales already plainly told," said Homer. And, he's right. He couldn't be more right. Why would I want to take a story that has been told a million and one times and repeat they same way a million and second? The Odyssey is an exciting journey. The expanse of time shouldn't make it dull. I need to prove this to our children! Just because something is old, doesn't mean it can't be polished to shine brightly. Teaching history is about reinventing the art of story-telling. I want to recycle the past with the much needed help of materials that can inspire a future generation. Your generosity would make this all a very real possibility.
