Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach seventh grade honors literature in the poorest Congressional district in the country, in a school filled with some of the most heartbreakingly inspiring children in the world. Nearly 90% of my students qualify for free lunch and all of them are in need of as much extra support and help as they can get.

My students are proving everyone wrong. They are proving to the world that despite their location and the lack of funding in their schools, they can still strive for excellence and success. They are ravenous for progress - they look only to be challenged, pushed and inspired. My students are book-eaters. They devour every text that comes into their hands and are constantly hungry for more. They are insatiable little learners, who desire only the most basic of educational tools - a good book. With these class texts, I will be able to appeal to their various interests and levels. I will be able to push them to their greatest potential, while remaining in their proximal zone of development, i.e., understanding & learning. I will be able to teach them both classics by John Steinbeck & contemporary novels that have to do with the social issues that they encounter everyday.

My students are diverse in background and complex in mind and spirit. They believe deeply in friendship, brotherhood, fairness, and heart. They have personally experienced how difficult life can be and have seen what happens to those who fail in school. The texts that I have chosen to teach embody my students' interests, hopes, and fears. These are novels that my students will believe in, and see themselves within the characters. These are novels that will allow my students to escape from the barren coldness of the real world into an imaginary world of magic and warmth. These are novels that will teach our children that there is life beyond the concrete jungle.

With your generous donations, you will be able to inflame my students with a love of reading and, most important, a love of books. With literacy rates scaling well below grade level in many districts across America, access to books grows more vital for our children. In a world where technology is on the verge of driving books into extinction, it has become even more essential for us to remind kids how wonderful it is to hold a book in their hands and to treat it as a dear friend. My students have particularly remarkable little minds, spirits, and hearts, and I have no doubt that your small gift to our classroom will be the catalyst to many life-changing experiences in both the real and imaginary world. Help my students become the exception to a cruel world that denies them the right to resources that they so desperately need - give books!
