My students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. I teach ESOL to students whose families have come to the United States as refugees. Eighty percent of my students live below the poverty line. We do not have a budget for books. Our school district is poor and struggling financially; teachers recently had to take a furlough in order to prevent layoffs. Simply put, my students face many obstacles to learning English.

Many of my students never get to go to the public library because the surrounding neighborhood can be rough and some parents feel it is not safe to allow their students to walk to the library. Since many of our families are poor, parents sometimes work multiple jobs and are very busy, or may not have the resources to provide access to abundant reading.

Our teachers have done their research: our students need to read between 400-800 minutes of reading each week to grow two grade levels this academic year. Why grow two grade levels? If students only grow one grade level, they will always remain behind grade level. Our students need to play catch up. Our students are working really hard at maintaining their reading activities.

We just need a lot of high-interest books!!! Audio books allow readers to access content that is a little more difficult than they could read independently. Literacy is our number one goal! You will make it possible for my students to have access to interesting novels and to help them catch up!
