Everybody Do Their Share!

My students need brooms, dustpans, mops, buckets, and cleaners to keep their learning environment clean and to teach them that it is important to take responsibility for their surroundings.

Clean Up, Clean Up! I am currently a 5th grade teacher at a Title One school. This is my first year at this particular school. Even though it is a great school, it comes with many challenges. I teach language arts, math, and social studies. My students are primarily African-American, with a few other ethnic groups sprinkled in, and come from low-income and high-stress environments. The economy in the state of Michigan is negatively affecting their educational progress. Our school strives for excellence in education, but due to budget cuts and deficits, our students are not given the tools they need to succeed.

Everyday my students overcome many obstacles just to arrive at school on time. Some students face transportation issues, parents with physical disabilities, and homelessness. Despite these obstacles, all of my students have excellent attendance. Then they enter a classroom that has not been cleaned from the night before. No sweeping or mopping of the floor, desks and chairs dirty, and a dry erase board that is turning gray from not being washed. How can anyone, let alone children be productive and learn in this kind of environment? The classroom floor is so dirty that their chairs have a difficult time sliding in and out from underneath their desks. Due to budget cuts in our district, our K-8 building has one morning and one evening custodian. We are lucky if they have time to collect the trash out of the room.

I know my students well enough to know that they are not the neatest at this age but they deserve a better environment to learn in. If my students are provided with the necessary tools to clean up after themselves, they would have no problem taking responsibility for their classroom. Brooms and dust pans would allow the floor to be swept nightly. Mops, buckets, and cleaners would be very useful in cleaning the floor at least once a week, especially in the winter when tracking in the outdoor elements. Basic supplies like paper towel and sponges are simple ways students can practice neater habits.

Your donations will provide an environment conducive to learning. No matter who a child is or where they come from they should not have to come to school and learn in filth. You might think this is not a project that encourages learning because it is not a request for books or pencils, but having a dry erase board that is clean or a desk that is wiped off makes a big difference when staying focused on a lesson.
