Our Midwestern middle school students would love to learn more about oceanic life. Each year we have over 160 brilliant 7th grade students who study life science. Most have have not had an opportunity to visit an ocean or view interactions among ocean dwelling creatures up close and personal. Our new saltwater aquarium seems to really be grabbing their attention.

Our 160 seventh grade students love our small saltwater tank. Unfortunately, events that occur are only visible to those children in the room right at that moment. We'd love to capture the actions and interactions of our underwater creatures, so all students could enjoy viewing and learning from them.

If we could purchase an aqua flex underwater camera with USB adapter, we could capture those moments and redisplay them as a larger image for all current and future students to enjoy. This would give the students a chance to compare creatures' physical structures and behaviors with personal interaction instead of just reading about them and dissecting them. My students would like to study our saltwater ecosystem close up and more in depth. Our clown fish and cleaner shrimp will many times take food right from our hand. The coral actually droops or gets rigid depending on the amount of light, food and oxygen available in the tank. Our most spectacular event happened the other day when our cleaner shrimp molted and was chased by our starfish. After cleaning the starfish, the shrimp pushed him back down the slope with his tiny claws. The starfish later settled on eating the molted shell on the bottom of the tank. It was such an awesome lesson (without involving any books) but, unfortunately, only the 20 kids in the one period got to witness the event. If we had an aqua flex underwater camera with usb adapter, we could capture and store digital underwater video clips and all 160 kids would be able to watch exciting events.

With your donation, our students will be on their way to meaningful interactions with creatures they normally couldn't fully understand. This will eventually lead to a better understanding of the ocean processes and, who knows, we could open some doors for future science careers in marine biology!
