I teach middle school students who have come to the United States as political refugees. Eighty percent of my students live below the poverty line and they are learning English at school because no one at home speaks English. It is my job, as their ESOL teacher, to help them acquire academic English as quickly as possible.

The obstacle my students face is "wait time". For example, when I am teaching the writing process, I want to show student-created models that are good examples of certain writing traits: voice, ideas, organization, conventions, presentation, etc. Currently, I have to collect the writing samples first. Then, overnight, I select the examples I wish to use and make transparencies of the papers. Finally, I will then have a document to share with the class. There are two problems with this: one, transparencies cost money and sometimes the copier is busy or broken; two, immediate feedback is better. Why is immediate feedback better? Well, it is better because the topic is fresh in the students' minds!

The combination of a document camera and a projector will provide my students with immediate feedback. A document camera enlarges any object placed under it. An attached projector will project the image onto a large screen at the front of the room. A document camera is so much better than an overhead projector because, as I mentioned before, an overhead projector must use transparencies of student work, and a document camera shows images (in color even!) immediately!

When students get immediate feedback using their own awesome work as examples, they make great connections between themselves and the topics they are learning about. They maximize the experiential and/or cooperative group work in the classroom and are able to apply it and evaluate it immediately while it still fresh in their minds. You will make it possible for my students to have the tools that most other surrounding county districts have, which means that my students, who are learning English and struggle with poverty will have equitable access to the technology that is prevalent in the richer school districts. Please, help us close the technology gap!
