This project expired on June 9, 2010.

I teach chess at a high poverty college-prep high school. Though the school I teach at does an effective job of preparing students for college academia, most of my students do not believe that they are meant to go to college. In order to better prepare my students to be competitive at local chess tournaments, I need better chess books. Many of my students have the raw chess talent to compete, but the lack of chess books has put them at a severe disadvantage. I have never let my students use poverty or what they do not have as an excuse for what they can not accomplish. With upcoming chess tournaments, I do not want our lack of chess books to be any type hindrance for their potential. And, without a doubt, my students have the potential to be successful tournament chess players as well as college students. If a collection of chess books written by Robert Snyder are purchased for my students, I believe this will translate into successful tournament performances. And, with this momentum, I plan to use these successes to demonstrate to them that they can successfully transition from high school into college. Thus, when my students arrive at college, they will know that with hard work and determination and with chess acting as their vehicle, they can succeed. Everyday, with the state of the current economy, I witness more and more educational cutbacks. But, these chess books by Robert Snyder can change my students’ futures in chess and college. With your help, it can be possible for my students to hold their heads up as they face the future challenges and obstacles that begin with chess and culminate in a college education.
