To the students in my low-income rural school, Shakespeare's Julius Caesar might as well be written in Latin - the language seems not only foreign, but DEAD! I know that tackling difficult material helps to prepare students for challenges they will face later - both in their studies at college and further in the future in their careers. But when the material seems both challenging AND dull, it's even harder for them to stay focused. "Caesar" is mostly political maneuvering and battle strategy - there's not a lot of action and excitement as a reward for all that hard work. Many students conclude that studying Shakespeare - and by extension, literature - isn't worth the effort.

But last semester, I witnessed a miracle! Thanks to the generous donors who funded project 285840, I was able to invite actors from the New American Shakespeare Tavern to come work with my students. These dedicated men and women put on vibrant productions of Shakespeare's plays using the original text. They offer workshops on the plays, in which the actors mentor small groups of students, engaging them fully with the characters, the story and the language.

When the students reflected on the workshop in their class journals, their responses were unfailingly positive. They were now excited about the play instead of dreading it. They were curious to discover the details that had been left out of the condensed version they practiced. I have a new group of students now (our classes meet in double-blocks but only last for one semester). Now that I know what's possible, it's even more important to me to see them excited about great literature!

Look at the photos for project 285840 (I wish I could upload more than six). The students are thoroughly involved in and excited about what they're learning. Shakespeare's play won't be any easier after this workshop. But the students will be confident about their ability to tackle Shakespeare successfully. That positive, hard-working attitude is absolutely essential for success in college. Help me encourage that attitude! Please support our project!
