Homework is a challenge for my 3rd graders. Many of them live in single parent homes with multiple siblings. Finding a quiet place to do homework or even someone who can help them is very difficult. Many times they turn in incomplete homework covered in food stains. Despite these difficult circumstances, my 25 3rd graders come to school every day with the best intentions, wanting to learn everything that they can. One of the challenges to homework is access to books. Research has shown that in order for students to make adequate yearly reading growth, they need to read (or be read to) for 90 minutes every day! Considering everything that I have to accomplish as a classroom teacher, finding 30 minutes a day to read in class is difficult. This is why homework and reading at home is to important. In order to help support my students more at home, I would like to create a lending library of graphic novels, so that not only will my students have greater access to books, but the high interest nature of these books means that reading time will fly by! The graphic novels that I am asking for take the classic series of the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and Babysitters Club and redo them as comic books. My students LOVE comic books, and I am sure that they will love this graphic novels as well. Having access to their books in the classroom, means that I won't have to worry about my students taking books home - they will be clamoring for the opportunity to read these books. I can also feel confident that they will complete all of their reading homework - and then some! You can help my students to reach their reading goals this year and truly be ready for 4th grade. Having these books will give my students ample opportunities to read and enjoy literature.
