I teach Kindergarten in a Title 1 school in Northern California. Over 50% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. I have 22 wonderful 5 and 6 year olds who are very enthusiastic learners. Our school has decided to start a new reading program. Along with our district language arts adoption, we are now implementing a daily reading program with five components to further advance our students reading levels. Each child will have leveled books just right for them to read to themselves, read to a friend, and listen to at a listening station. Children will also have a writing and word work component to support and enhance their academic day. My problem is that I do not have leveled books in my classroom and our school library does not have enough leveled books to support each classroom. Each student will have a personal book box. The students will keep 5-6 books in their book box for one week. Daily, students will read these books and work on reading the words, reading the pictures,and retelling the story. At the end of the week, students will exchange their books for different books that are also on their reading level. As a whole group and in small group sessions, we will work on reading strategies in the areas of comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding their vocabulary. For this program to be successful, I need several leveled books at the students reading levels and some books above their reading level. For students to become strong readers, they need daily practice reading books they can read with confidence and books that can challenge them to the next reading level. Your donation will make it possible for all my students this year and for years to come to have the opportunity to read books that are just right for them. My students will have the best chance to become fluent, confident, and successful readers when they have books they can read in their classroom.
