Reading About Holidays Helps Us Understand Each Other

My students need 8 sets of 4 books on non-Christian holidays and single copies of 8 other books on Muslim and Jewish holidays and culture to be read aloud, perused by students, or available to parents.

Our urban, high-needs elementary school is one of the most diverse in the city. December is a stressful time for many children, especially those who do not celebrate Christian holidays. This year (not for the first time) I was asked to host an alternative activity for children who did not want to participate in a school-wide December sing along.

Muslim, Hindu, and Native American children flocked to my room, as well as a few Christians who do not celebrate Christmas in public, if at all. We played games, did arts and crafts, and talked about why we were there. I realized I knew little about some of the children's holidays and religions, and they knew little about mine.

Eight different books on diverse holidays and 8 sets of easily-read and understood books for students to read and study will educate both children and myself on holidays celebrated in our community.

Equity and high-interest reading materials, what a combination! Your support will educate children (and adults!) for years. Citizens who understand and accept each others' cultural and religious differences make the United States the great country it is.
