ELMO: Instant Feedback for Young Writers and Mathematicians

My students need 1 ELMO document camera, so that we can project student writing, math, and other classwork for immediate study and feedback.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Immediate feedback is a powerful tool for young learners. Children want to know exactly where they stand, what they're doing well, and what they need to excel to the next level. This is why teachers build in opportunities for assessment and feedback throughout the day - we check homework, give specific compliments on writing, invite students to share solutions to complicated math problems, and we publicize student achievement by hanging exemplary work and calling home to congratulate a job well done. The ELMO document camera is a tool that can help me provide instant and consistent feedback to all the students in my class by allowing me to project their work in real time for the entire class to see. I teach fifth grade in an elementary school in New York. We are a Title I school, 93% of the students receive free or reduced lunch, and many of our students learned English as a second language.

Despite these odds, our students do tremendously well. Our teachers provide after-school and Saturday school small-group instruction, and our families are highly supportive of their children's education. One of the things our students get most excited about it is sharing their work publicly. We hold public writing celebrations where parents and siblings attend to hear finished pieces, and we hold annual science fairs to display student inventions. However, I believe it is the daily work of the classroom - the quality of daily writing entries, the organization and explanation in solving complex word problems each morning - that really makes the successful student. I want to make the "daily grind" matter more by making it public. I believe this will increase the quality of daily student practice, as well as open new opportunities for "teachable moments" throughout the day.

The ELMO document camera will allow me to do just that. The camera is a simple tool that allows a teacher to place a book, a student notebook, or a plain piece of paper below the camera, and then project the image in "real time" for all of the class to see. So, mid-way through a writing period, I might see a student who is trying three different leads successfully, and I might grab their notebook and display this writing for the class. This provides positive reinforcement for the student, as well as a student sample for other writers to model from. During math, I might take two student math notebooks and invite the class to compare the different strategies they used to achieve their answers. During reading, I might invite a child to share how they solved a tricky word in their book, so at the end of the reading period they might place their book beneath the projector and "re-enact" their word solving strategy for the whole class to see. These are just a few of the incredible opportunities the ELMO provides for giving students immediate feedback in the classroom. As a teacher in her tenth year of teaching, I am convinced this will be an incredible investment.

My goal is to help students see that every minute counts, every page matters, and every solution should be ready to share. Thank you for your support of Donors Choose, and especially for this project!
