This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come to art class excited to learn about art, eager to discover their talents, and a little worried about their skill level. The first thing they want to know is what art supplies they will need and how they will store them in my classroom. They are fearful that they aren’t good enough at drawing to be in my class. I nudge them and encourage them through the beginnings of their skill building and before too long they are showing me their artwork with pride. I tell them that their art class is the most important class in school because it crosses every discipline and feeds their spirit. It will develop a part of their mind they never knew existed.

My Project

International Baccalaureate (IB)students who are enrolled in the Diploma Program are often my IB art students. They work on a number of components for their IB exam which will result in an IB diploma. If the student succeeds in passing their IB exams in all subjects they are able to obtain up to 24 hours of college credits at state colleges and universities. The IB program is growing at Odessa High, which means my classes of IB students are growing in number, too. They need a safe and secure way of storing and transporting their artwork for the IB exam and I have run out of mesh bags for them. Since my budget has been cut, I cannot afford to add bags for the growing class sizes. It is very important for my student’s success to be able to present their artwork for their exam and the bags are a necessary component.
