I teach at an inner city high school in DC. We are Title 1 ranked, most of my students are on free or reduced lunch, and we are 99.5% African American. I strive to teach my students World Geography, Ancient World History, and Modern World History to ninth through twelfth graders.

Most of my students do not know technology, despite being the technology generation. We do not have a working computer lab and most students only take 1 computer class during their time in high school. Needless to say, students graduate without even understanding how to work Microsoft Word. Most of my students do not have the resources to get a Christmas present this year, let alone a personal laptop, which is why I want to bring two HP laptops to them in the form of classroom supplies.

As a solution, I am striving to build a mini computer lab in my classroom using HP computers to help teach students how to use them while still learning the content. My senior students can use the computers to apply for college and/or scholarships and my social studies students can learn how to use basic programs and research skills within the confines of our own classroom.

If you know any teenagers, you know that they understand computers. How can anyone expect the students I work with and love to compete with that with only one computer class in high school and no other opportunity to learn how to use one? If we could have these two HP computers to use in the classroom, that could truly help them to hone their technology skills and compete with students at the college level as they leave my school.
