My students need 35 copies of the memoir entitled "Looking Like the Enemy: My Story of Imprisonment in Japanese-American Internment Camps" and one DVD entitled "Unfinished Business."

I teach Social Studies at an urban charter school, which serves a population of students that come from the worst forms of poverty.

Throughout their school years, many of my African-American students struggle with their own personal identities. They also generally lack the confidence that they can succeed in college (if they dare to go).

My students need a class set of the memoir "Looking Like the Enemy" by Mary Matsuda Gruenewald and the academy-award nominated documentary "Unfinished Business." I'd like to utilize these materials to explore the Japanese-American Internment during World War II. Not only is "Looking Like the Enemy" written at a college-age reading level - which would enhance both my students' reading and critical thinking skills - but it also would help my students better understand this little known yet important historical event. These materials will serve as a spring board for discussions among students about the definition of freedom, the treatment of others, and the political compromises during war. Using Gruenewald's memoir in my classroom will help to develop my students' sense of political morality and social justice.

Every donation brings my students closer to fulfilling their individual promise, which will inspire them to create a more peaceful and just world for themselves and their fellow man.
