Cooking Up Great Learning

My students need a toaster oven so that we can incorporate cooking into our first grade curriculum.

I teach first grade in a high-need community. My school is 70% free or reduced lunch, and many of my students come from single-parent homes.

I discovered in my first year of teaching when I was reading a book called "We Bake Cookies" with my reading group that my students could not figure out the unknown words in the text. I told them to use the strategies of a reader and to think about what would make sense. I asked "What would you use to make cookies?" as a clue to figure out the word flour. The children looked at me very confused. I asked one child, "How do you make cookies at home?" and he answered, "We break them off and cook them". They did not have the experience of making homemade cookies from scratch to draw upon to figure out the words in the story. I was shocked that all they knew was "break and bake"! I knew immediately that we HAD to make cookies! Through cooking in my classroom, I am able to incorporate many standards: writing, reading, math, following step-by-step instructions, and social studies. My students absolutely LOVE to cook and they are developing so many skills at once.

I have requested a toaster oven with two cooking racks so that we can bake in our classroom. My students are able to build vocabulary and background knowledge through our cooking experiences. For our study of countries around the world we have made Mexican rice, pasta for Italy, and Potato Soup for Ireland. We also cook for the holidays. For Johnny Appleseed's birthday, we made fried apple pies and for Christmas we made gingerbread men to go along with our literature study of the classic fairytale, The Gingerbread Man. The kids love it, and they really get so much out of the experience! The children write their own recipe cards and keep an ongoing recipe book as a keepsake from first grade.

With your help my students can further explore cooking in our classroom. Your help would target and expand upon all subjects and standards for first grade while offering a memorable experience for my students.
