Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Young children are active learners and benefit from hands-on learning experiences. I am a first year kindergarten teacher in high-need community. We are a Title I school and all of our students receive free lunch. Your help will give my students resources they may not have otherwise.

Our school has a large number of ESL (English as a second language) students and studies have shown how important dramatic play is for these students. It provides them with the opportunity for language development in a safe setting. Language development is crucial in acquiring reading and writing skills. Being this is my first year teaching, my resources are extremely limited. I would love to provide my children with rich language experiences during our community helpers unit. We will be learning about the different jobs people do in our community and these materials will give the children the opportunity to participate in meaningful learning experiences.

Dramatic play is important to a child's development. It helps children acquire language skills, develop important social skills, and learn skills needed for daily living. I am requesting materials to enhance the learning centers in my classroom. I have asked for a mailbox to place in our writing center to encourage writing and language development. I have also requested tools, safety goggles, gloves, and wood to set up a construction center in the classroom. Many of my students have relatives working with tools and this would give the children a meaningful learning experience. I have also requested a shopping cart, cash register, phone, medical kit, and career hats to enhance play in the dramatic play center. This will give my students the opportunity to learn about the different jobs people in our community do.

Your help will allow me to provide my students with meaningful learning experiences. It is my job to create a curriculum that enhances children's development and learning and you can help me do this. Learning center play allows children to develop creative abilities and critical thinking skills. It also allows children with the opportunity to develop social skills in a "safe" setting (among peers). Your help will make it possible for me to make sure that the needs of all learners are being met.
