Eager! Excited! Creative! And ecologically aware! Those are all the words I’d use to describe my group of after school students who attend my photography club once a week to explore the endless opportunities a camera can offer to them as they learn how to express themselves both behind and in front of the camera. They are all working on a film that will tell others about how important it is to protect and save their world. They are the directors, the producers and the actors, coming to class each week, ready to write and film, filled with so many thoughts and ideas but the equipment in our school holds them back! Last week, Mel, a bright and confident 6th grader, was patiently waiting for her turn to use the video camera and was busy working on one of our desktop computers, frustrated that the computer didn’t have the capabilities she needed, when she asked me if I could ‘write a grant for a new Apple laptop. It would make everything so much easier.’ She then added, ‘how about a grant for a lab of Apple laptops’. Knowing that wasn’t a possibility, at least at this point, I said ‘we could write a proposal for a laptop Mel and maybe we’ll be funded.’ She and the others smiled. Technology is advancing so quickly and our schools cannot afford the advances. We hope that others will see the critical need here for our students to be able to plug in the video camera, download it and edit their footage with iMOVIE on an Apple computer. Our students are eager, ready and would be benefit so much if this proposal was funded. Won’t you consider supporting our art as filmmakers so that we can tell others our story?
