Classic Literature Reveals New Worlds to Fourth Graders

My students need 22 copies each of 4 book titles - from "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer", "The Diary of a Young Girl", "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone".

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach fourth grade bilingual students in a low-income neighborhood at a Title 1 school. Sadly, my students ask, "Tom who?" and they know Harry only through the television—when so much of his magic sparkles brighter in the book. Tom Sawyer should create mischief in the mind of every 10-year-old. Harry Potter should play Quidditch in every classroom. Fourth graders today miss out on literary classics because their parents do not introduce them to such literature, and the classroom curriculum focuses on preparing them for the TAKS test. They have limited resources to buy books and do not know what books to buy. They need guidance to understand the situation of Anne Frank in her attic, and to apply the wisdom of Atticus Finch. We need 22 copies each of four book titles, from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer to The Diary of a Young Girl, To Kill a Mockingbird and more. I want to put classic literature into the hands of each of my students. With the four books I’ve requested, I will start a book club that will meet several times a week outside of regular school hours (before or after school, or during lunch) where I can lead my students into the deep wonders of other worlds. We will discover Twain's mysterious houses and Rowling’s wizarding castles. The students will not only grow in their reading ability, they will enter into the lives of timeless characters and grow as human beings. They will fall in love with reading and see different ways to live and understand their universe. You can unlock the door to these worlds. Your contribution will enable my class to embark on the journey of discovery that they will otherwise never take. You can increase my students’ reading levels and multiply their love of reading. Please show them the importance of classic literature through your support.
