My class is so eager and excited to learn about real life events, you would never guess that they walk the difficult road of both learning English as a Second Language (ESL) and managing their learning disabilities at the same time. My students show an incredible amount of interest in those things they can intuit with all of their senses. Once these topics are written on paper, however, their interest is lost because they have difficulty connecting the role of the written word with their excitement for real experiences. I've found that taking the kids on field trips helps them to make this connection more easily. It also helps them to see the importance of reading and writing so they are inherently motivated to learn. The only drawback is that, as an ESL teacher, I can't take them on trips that aren't just around the block and we've exhausted these possibilities. Enter the Lakeshore theme boxes: These boxes are the ideal solution for my kids who so desperately need to connect their experiences with their writing in order to learn the language and to stay motivated. Reading and writing doesn't come easy for the learning disabled or those who speak a different language. These kids are working against all odds to achieve in my class - I want to help them bridge the gap between their amazing motivation to learn about topics in a hands-on way and their reading and writing skills. This is where you come in! I need you to help me bridge this gap. These theme boxes are the perfect solution to ease the literacy struggles of my students, but they are far too big a dream for my financial situation. I hope we can work together to build a foundation to support these vivacious students!
