I teach 26 enthusiastic fourth graders who come to school each day eager to learn. My group of urban students includes students who are learning English and students in special education. They are united by their love of reading.

Naruto? Magic Pickle? Baby Mouse? Lunch Lady? These certainly are not the names of books around when I was in fourth grade. Instead, these are the names of graphic novel series that my students are dying to read. Currently we have one graphic novel series in our classroom, "Bone." The "Bone" books are constantly in circulation, not even making it back to their book bin before they're grabbed by another reader. I watch my students bring them to lunch, recess, and gym to read. However, this is the only graphic novel series currently in my classroom.

In order to maintain my students' initial enthusiasm for graphic novels, I want to expose them to additional series of age-appropriate graphic novels. I have requested 59 books from 10 different graphic novel series. The series range from traditional Japanese graphic novels to graphic novels geared toward struggling readers. Once my students are hooked in a series, they will be able to read all the books in the series in order. Graphic novels require students to bring together an incredible amount of information from both the pictures and text in order to understand the story. This is such powerful work for them to undergo as readers!
