Request from Kansas - one of the states facing major education funding cuts! Our school is located in a small rural farming community. I teach junior high Reading, Science and Social Studies to 39 students. My goal this year is to get my students excited about reading.

We just received notice of our SECOND HUGE state funding cut this year. The school board has placed all staff on a purchasing freeze for the remainder of the school year (and probably next year). I am hoping to replace my older novels with newer novels the students will enjoy reading. Two years ago I purchased "The Outsiders" for my eighth grade reading class, but I have not been able to purchase a novel for my seventh grade class. When I mentioned I was applying for this grant the seventh graders suggested the Shadow Children series.

I am requesting 25 copies of the first book, "Among The Hidden". I am hoping by introducing the students to book one of this series they'll want to read the complete series. My long range goal is to purchase the complete series in sets of 5 for small group reading.
