It's Electrifying!

My students need eight student electricity kits and a battery tester.

Mrs. W. Hartsville High School
Hartsville, SC Grades 9-12

I teach physical science and chemistry in a poor, public, high need school district. The estimated median household income in our district in 2007 was almost $9000.00 less than the state average, which was itself in the lowest ten of of all the states in America. However, my state is in the top ten when it comes to violent crime and unemployment rates. Finally, students at our school scored lower than the state average on the required state-designed final exam in physical science. Passing physical science is a requirement to graduate in our state, so our poor performance is a real blow. Despite all of this, my students want to believe that they can overcome these obstacles and be successful. I am determined to prove to them and everyone else that they can achieve their dreams.

Many of my students have an unimpressive track record on previous standardized tests. This leads the students to believe that they will not perform well on future tests like the state final exam in physical science and on college entrance exams. I am certain that the problems of the past can be overcome in the future with better preparation. My students have had to make do with very limited laboratory experiences in science classes. Without hands-on activities, even concrete ideas become abstract and difficult to understand. Even the best teacher giving the best lesson on electricity is a poor substitute for actually building a working circuit. An animation on magnetic fields is far less memorable than mapping out the lines that are created by an electric current yourself. What limited opportunities that I have been able to provide my students in the past have inevitably been topics that they were able to perform well on in later tests. Students always respond well to experiments, showing increased interest, motivation, and understanding whenever they can get into lab.

A portion of the physical science exam that we typically perform poorly on involves electricity and magnetism. Animations, videos, and worksheets simply are not getting the students' attention and are certainly not promoting the level of understanding that they need. Simple electrical sets would allow students to complete up to 25 different experiments in electricity covering all of the major topic areas. I cannot help but believe that going from lectures to labs will help my students grasp the concepts far more readily. Looking at a diagram of a circuit and being asked if it will work or not is certain to be easier when students have actually built working circuits themselves. The added benefit from increased scores on the final exam will be the proof to the students that they can excel on standardized tests and in challenging science classes. Knowing that they are capable of success will make success more likely. Their well-earned confidence will will make going on to college or advanced training seem more like an obvious choice than a waste of time and money. Finally, students develop important problem-solving skills while working in lab and learn to work with others to solve problems.

You generous donation will ensure that my students have experiences that will deepen their understanding of electricity as well as develop important interpersonal and cognitive skills. The electrical kits will definitely be more interesting and, dare I say it, more fun than worksheets!
