Shakespeare in Middle School...It Is Possible!

My students need 100 copies of William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet".

Grades 6-8

I am a 7th and 8th grade reading teacher working in the heart of Chicago. We are a magnet school that serves students from all academic, economic and cultural backgrounds. When I began teaching Shakespeare to my 7th grade class four years ago no one believed I could do it in a way that students would understand let alone enjoy! Boy did I prove my critics wrong! After teaching "A Midsummer's Night Dream" to 7th grade those same students begged for another play in 8th grade! Generous donors made it possible and my students now read and act out "Macbeth" in 8th grade. How do I do it you ask? I use No Fear Shakespeare novels that have the complete play written both in everyday English and Shakespeare's language side by side on each page. My 8th grade students have pleaded every year to do more than one Shakespeare play. Sadly this is not possible as the books I need are expensive and budgets fall short for what many consider the "extras". This year I would love to surprise my students and introduce them to the much loved play, "Romeo and Juliet." In order to accomplish this I need 100 copies of Shakespeare's " Romeo and Juliet" using No Fear Shakespeare. It is my turn to beg and plead for my 8th graders. Please consider donating these books to our classroom! This format makes it accessible to all students whether they are new to English, have difficulty reading, or simply are intimidated by Shakespeare in general. It never ceases to amaze me how my students naturally move from reading the play in everyday English to using Shakespeare's own words. Their work is showcased every year as they act out scenes to shocked parents and faculty who seem to have a hard time believing what they are seeing!
