This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Years ago I purchased a class set of "Journey to Topaz" that has been well-loved, used, studied, and is now worn out. Due to state testing, social studies takes a back burner to math and language arts However, we have to finish our reading curriculum before testing, which leaves about a month for something that interests my students and nicely concludes our California History studies.

Our Title 1 school is a combination of mainly Hispanic and Asian immigrants that soak up literature to which they can relate. We are on the fringe of gang neighborhoods which fortunately touch only a few of our students. My students are still at an impressionable age that can be swayed against prejudice. I have taught this novel for many years, and it never fails to engage and enrage all the students against injustice.

All I need is a new set of the books. I have an activity guide, and many resources I have created over the years, including vocabulary, art projects, and critical thinking discussions.

Your support will aid in the character development of the next generation. Learning from the past is the best way to improve the future. "Journey to Topaz" has proven to present tough issues from the point of view of an average child that my students enjoy.
