This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Does segregation exist at the dawn of 2010? If you visit my inner city school, you will realize that it does. I teach tenth grade English in an high-need community. My students are fighting every day to receive the same educational rights as their privileged peers. They hope to enter college, the American work force and to become productive citizens that will make their community and families proud.

My students need examples of others breaking through segregated situations and overcoming the odds of circumstance. They need inspiration, especially as the school year comes to an end and they begin considering their options for college, leadership and life.

I am requesting 56 copies of Kaffir Boy. This text centers on one young man's experience of the apartheid in South Africa and his life as a survivor. This text will be shared by 150 students a year for the next several years. Some of my classes are as large as 40 students and several copies will be designated for special tutoring services during and after school.

As the school year continues, my students need hope. Hope that their lives can get better. Hope that their circumstances can be challenged. You can help give them this hope.
