Kinders & Cameras

My students need a digital camera.

Mrs. Thomas Allen Jay Elementary School
High Point, NC Grades PreK-2

One word best sums up my students- enthusiastic! My combination Kindergarten & 1st grade class LOVES school, LOVES to read, LOVES to explore their world and "discover" how things work or how animals grow and move; quite simply they LOVE to learn! My students attend an urban, high-need school where most of our families qualify for free & reduced lunch. We have a large population of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students who come to us from all over the world. In our classroom, however, we are learning not to let these types of challenges slow us down, but we are each finding joy in every day and in the adventure of learning!

My students LOVE to take photos of themselves and their friends as they work. They enjoy seeing their work recorded in photography, observing nature and recording those observations with a picture and sharing their photos and work with their families and others at school. The children frequently request that I take pictures of something they see out in the woods behind our classroom, a falling leaf, the mushrooms they discover in the field at recess, a pattern they are making in the math station, or the teamwork shared when working a puzzle together with friends. I use my personal camera frequently in the classroom, but have worn out more than one camera in the past years, and often do not have my camera with me at school on a particular day when the children need it for their work.

We would really benefit from having a classroom dedicated camera that would travel with us throughout our days, on trips, at special events, and would be available at a moment's notice. The children enjoy helping me take photos, but with a classroom camera I could really begin to teach them how to operate a camera, how to use their critical, artistic eye to capture their work in the best way, to look at the world around them with a photographer's eye. They would benefit from the responsibility of operating "their" own camera as they learned and developed their understanding of technology. This camera would be used in conjunction with the new photo printer we are receiving through another Donors Choose grant to immediately be able to print photos the children take.

Your help will provide my young learners with a small, but wonderful piece of technology that will help them be able to record their work and share it with those around us. You will help my children learn new skills and become more tech-savvy. Thank you so much for helping me help my students learn and grow!
